Visual Testing – Spark NDT

What is Visual testing?

In all effective NDT methods visual Inspection is most widely used among all NDT methods. It is simple, easy to apply and quickly carried out when comparing to other methods, also it is low in cost. We can find only surface defects in test components thus leading to an immediate rejection of the components and it saves time and money.

What are the various types of equipments used in visual testing is mirror, borescopes, magnifying lens, microscopes, optical flats, optical comparators.

What are the types of defects that we can detect in this method?

  •  General surface of components
  •  Presence of corrosion in the products or surface.
  •  Presence of cracks, orientation of cracks, position of cracks.
  •  Surface porosity, unfilled craters, contour of weld beads and adjoining parent metal.
  •  Potential source of mechanical weakness such as shock nocturne or misalignment.

Advantage & Disadvantage of Visual testing?

Advantages of Visual Inspection Techniques:

  • Inexpensive
  • Little to no equipment needed
  • Easy to train
  • Portable
  • Minimum Part Preparation

Disadvantages of Visual Inspection Techniques:

  • Surface indications only
  • Generally only able to detect large flaws
  • Possible misinterpretation of flaws
