What is Magentic Particle Testing or Inspection? (MPT/MPI)

What is magnetic particle inspection?
Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is performed on ferrous material. We use magnetic field and fine ferrous material powder. It helps to identify discontinues on the surface as well as below the surface (sub-surface).
What are the applications of Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)?
Applications for magnetic particle testing include testing of welds, castings, tools, bar-stock, billet and other industrial components. It is used for quality control in objects made of ferrous material.

Welds are used in manufacture of various objects. Ferrous metals such as iron are commonly used.
Bar stocks are commonly tested using magnetic particle testing. Some form of automation also exists to do these tests as the bars are of uniform dimensions.
Billet bars are used in construction of buildings. They are tested using MPT and other NDT methods before they are used in construction.

How can I do a course in magnetic particle inspection?
You can get trained from a Nondestructive testing institute such as Spark Institute of Nondestructive Testing.
